How to Keep Your Putter Low for a Truer Roll

Keep the putter moving straight and low through the ball to encourage a better roll and truer putts. Eric demonstrates a simple practice setup that gives the putter a clear path.

Set up the drill

1. Place two alignment rods on the putting surface, parallel to your target line and just wider than the putter head.
2. Set the ball between the rods and square the putter behind it.
3. Make a short stroke while keeping the putter low and centered between the rods.
4. Repeat at a comfortable pace before adding distance.

What to watch

The rods give you immediate visual feedback. If the putter moves sharply across the line, the space between the rods makes that movement easier to see. Reset, shorten the stroke, and keep the motion controlled.

Build it into practice

Begin close enough to the hole that you can focus on the stroke instead of the result. Once the putter stays low and on line, move back in small increments while keeping the same setup.
